The Star Hotel has been recently renovated in the style of a historic building but with a contempery inspired art house fit out.

The internal court yard
The Wine Bar & Café off High St

History of the site

Star Hotel was constructed in 1867 to cater for the booming river trade. The hotel was constructed with a large under ground bar called The Shades. This was to escape the summer heat to have a drink in the relative cool 12 ft under the ground.

The Star hotel was one of 78 hotels in echuca. The hotel was know as a rough and drunken establishment and was eventually de licensed in 1897. The Hotel owner how ever continued to trade illegally and was raided by police, the Hoteliers answer to this was to construct a escape tunnel out of the shades bar out into the alley behind. The cellar and escape tunnel can still be visited today.

After being shut down as a hotel the building became a residence for over forty years. At which time the occupance were un aware of the cellars beneath.

Current History

The Historic Hotel was eventually purchased by the City of Echuca in 1973 and restored.
In 1995 the hotel re opened as a café.
In 1999 it was relicensed and re opened as the Star Hotel once more.
